Swami Vivekananda on Spirituality and Science
Today, when people hear the word “Swami” they immediately think of a fraudster or scammer. But if there was one person who first said “Science and Spirituality are two sides of the same coin” it was Swami Vivekananda.
On 12th January it is the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, and this day is celebrated as National Youth Day. But why? What work did Swamiji do that makes him a man of science and a youth icon as well?
In the next few minutes I’ll tell you about Swamiji’s Practical approach, which helped Nikola Tesla too. Please read this post till the end, if you get any value then spread this message!
Spreading knowledge about Indian heros like Swami Vivekananda to the new generation in an easy to understand language, is my mission.

Why Swamiji was Different
In his childhood, swamiji was not comfortable in math or religion, but he was a desiple of science and spirituality.
When he met his Guru Ramkrishna Paramhansa, he learnt about India’s ancient vedic secrets, he realized that the Vedas had a lot of knowledge that should spread worldwide.
It was the 1890s, India’s identity across the world was that of a British Colony, far from being a knowledge gold mine. People thought India was only a slave factory.
But Swami Vivekananda wanted to change that, and the Parliament of Religions happening in 1893 in Chicago was the best place to start.
When you mix nationalism, with unlimites knowledge and Spirituality, you end up with an amazing combination. Basically, you end up with Swami Vivekananda.
When others were caught up in proving whose religion is better, Swamiji used a novel approach. He said- “As the different streams having their source in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight.”- Swami Vivekananda
When the world was debating on Darwin’s theory of evolution, when racism and slavery was at its peak, saying our Source of Destination is the same on a Global Platform, was nothing short of revolutionary.
Because of these revolutionary thoughts, Swami Vivekananda became one of the most rational thinkers, the world has ever seen.

Swami Vivekananda and Nikola Tesla meeting
But the fun fact is that the Revolutionaries from other fields became Swamiji’s friends. Like Nikola Tesla– many credit Edision for his work in electric power, but the truth is, Edision was an excellent businessman.
He was a genius in acquiring and marketing patents, but Tesla was a superior inventor. His technology was miles ahead of Edison’s technology. Tesla’s inventions are used in 80% of the gadgets we use today.
Proof from the Nikola Tesla Museum archives shows that a lot of his work was based on Vedic Principals. Tesla’s book mentions the Sanskrit words Akash (Sky) and Prana (Breath).
When Tesla met Swamiji, he was much older than him and was an established scientist by then. And then Tesla learned about Sanskrit and the Vedas from Swamiji.
Vivekananda believed that all the forces that are around us are all a part of a unified single force. And slowly, this spiritual sounding statement was proved by many scientists using equations.
In 1895, there was an interesting debate between Swamiji and Tesla, Swamiji believed that Matter and Energy are the Same. Tesla wanted to work on this idea.
Unfortunately, Tesla could not complete his research, but in the future, this was done by another great scientist. Thus the world got its famous equation- E= MC2
In fact, inspired by Mahabharata, Tesla wanted to create a weapon like this, but after his death, the US Government classified his research.
Not only Tesla, did you know when Jamsetji Tata (Founder of Tata Group) introduced steel manufacturing in India, he met Swami Vivekananda.
Swami Vivekananda on Science and Spirituality – Why Both are Important
Swamiji stressed on the need of science education and scientific temper in India, based on its ancient spirit.
Not only this, William James, the father of American Psychology, German scientist Herman Von Helmholtz and Indian scientist, JC Bose the father of 5g, considered Vivekananda as their guide. This happened because Swamiji believed in the pursuit of truth, whatever be the mode.
He taught the morden world about our Vedas, in the same way. Through his disciples, travelling in Indian villages armed with a globe and a lantern, Swami Vivekananda taught modern science to India. This Balance makes him a YOUTH ICON.
He knew that the future world could not relay on a foundation of only modern science or only ancient wisdom.
Science and spirituality are not meant to compete with each other, they are meant to complement each other. We wish today’s religious leaders were as open minded.
If you want this Scientific side of Swamiji to reach the World, share this post. The tragedy is, while the West is curious about our culture, our people are running away from our culture and our roots.
See, I don’t mean to say that our culture and history is superior to that of otheres or that is 100% perfect. Not at all. But one thing for sure! Science is admitting what we don’t know.
Swami Vivekananda had seen the impact that our knowledge could have if it spread throughout the world, and bringing this knowledge to you makes a difference to me!

"When doubts haunt me when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. This book has the power to change your life, because it changed mine.
